Released in 2008, the Compulsion series is the second category created by Felt that relies on an innovative suspension technology named Equilink.
The technology was created to provide riders with the complete full-suspension experience, a full package of all the qualities they want from a bike.
The Compulsion series is designed for technical riding as well as heavy-duty, long-distance racing. While this price range is nowhere near the entry-level segment, it’s affordable for serious mountain riders.
To compare with the Virtue series, bikes under the Compulsion series come with a more upright cockpit, a shorter top tube, a more relaxed geometry, an aluminum subframe, and overall stouter tubing.
All of these result in higher efficiency for an aggressive trail and all-mountain bicycle that comes down to the two key factors:
- Speed: Compulsion bicycles offer unmatched efficiency with zero pedal kickback, consistency, bobbing resistance, and sensitivity to every tiny bump on the way to help you ride faster.
- Simplicity: Compulsion bikes are simple to ride with all features being user-friendly.
Compulsion models offer compactness and minimal weight despite their improved strength thanks to the material Felt uses.
The Equilink tech developed and owned by the brand means you get exclusive efficiency that requires no internal factory settings along with fluid suspension performance and durability.
Which Components Stand Out?
Frame & Geometry
After spending three years working on the new Compulsion series, we were able to update the frame and geometry design to meet the needs of modern riders.
There are two frame layouts, including a carbon fiber front triangle with aluminum rear stays in aluminum linkage and an aluminum front triangle with aluminum linkage.
Compared to the previous version, the new series utilizes a full carbon fiber frame along with a rear triangle, featuring our proprietary UHC Advanced layup.
The term UHC describes our frames, which use complex lay-up schedules with many kinds of carbon fiber components, to obtain performance characteristics specific to each bike.
Such a complex layup is also a factor that makes us stand out from the rest of the market as most brands pursue simple structures with unidirectional carbon fiber instead.
So, UHC indicates how committed we are to delivering the best qualities using the best materials we can find.
We also use MMC InsideOut construction, which guarantees zero stray fibers in the frame for minimal weight and cleaner tubing.
Meanwhile, to achieve high-quality tubing, we adopt full internal cable routing along with a threaded bottom bracket that features ISCG05 tabs allowing the rider to run a chain guide.
In addition, we implement the Equilink 6-bar suspension design on the Compulsion series, which offers characteristics similar to a 4-bar linkage but supports pedaling better.
In the Equilink tech, there is an extra link connecting the top rockers to the bottom rockers for increased pedaling support without compromising the descending abilities of the bike.
For this to happen, carbon fiber links are used with a longer trunnion-mounted Fox shock that lowers the leverage ratio while raising traction.
In terms of geometry, we introduce one that is much more suited for rigors of more extreme fails, lower bottom bracket, adjusted had animals, adjusted seating position, and overall fine-tuned and dialed the ride for the needs of trail riders who are really pushing the edge.
Front / Rear Triangle
One of the best things about using Equilink technology is minimal weight and compact size. As the key suspension members are contained right behind the seat tube, all you will be able to see is a bullet-proof 6061 series aluminum front triangle.
For the top tube, we deploy the latest model in hydroformed tech that allows for manipulating and strengthening tubing without compromising the lightweight feature. At the same time, we make the rear triangle with oversized, manipulated 6061 heat-treated aluminum.
The Compulsion series was designed to handle all brands of shock around the conventional shock length with no need for specific internal factory settings.
The suspension system built with Equilink tech provides the greatest efficiency with no requirement for platform-valved shocks to cover design deficiencies.
Links & Pivots
The Compulsion series comes with cold-forged links to ensure strength and are CNC-machined to guarantee the lightweight feature. All pivots have specified sealed cartridge bearings.
About The Applied Technologies
Equilink six-bar suspension design:
The red Equilink is placed behind the seat tube, which counteracts transfer itself so the drivetrain doesn’t have to.
With this design, the more weight transfer initiated when you pedal, it will mirror the effort and maintain constant equalization. As a result, the pedaling efficiency is maximized while the suspension remains equalized.
The first benefit coming with this 6-bar suspension design is an overall lightweight bike. As the Equilink system is compact, the frame can use lightweight, simple tubing.
Secondly, you will benefit from the simplicity offered by this design since it’s easy and quick to set up.
Another advantage of this series over competitors on the market is the sweet spot.
In many suspension bikes, you can find the sweet spot in certain conditions and settings but it is hard and time-consuming. But the Compulsion gives you a sweet spot through the whole ride, so if you are off by some PSI, you won’t face pedal kickback or bobbing.
In addition, the Equilink system is the first to effectively remove the use of the drivetrain in counteracting weight transfer, which causes bobbing.
Designed to neutralize the impacts of weight transfer without the direct chain force, Equilink achieves the perfect suspension equalization.
Carbon Fiber Technology:
Taking advantage of the Ultra Hybrid Carbon, we blend high modulus with intermediate modulus carbon fiber to give vibration damping and impact resistance to the bike to ensure comfort and durability for you.
This technique results in thicker areas at the joints functioning similarly to how butting works on metal tubing. This means, the material is distributed more at important places and we can choose the type of material most suitable for the application, which can’t be achieved with metal tubing.
Ultimately, you get a truly stiff bicycle with maximized facets, featuring a one-piece forged dropout that delivers greater strength and lower risk of failure.
Our carbon fiber tech also delivers unmatched freedom when it comes to making the frame and key components.
Specifically, we have the freedom to choose the geometry and dimensions, of the frame, the number of material layers, the diameter of the tubes, the size of the layers of carbon fiber, and the kind of carbon fiber to use in each place.
As a result, we can make the best out of these factors to balance weight, stiffness, and ride quality corresponding to the specific needs of different types of riders.
The Top Picks of Felt Compulsion Series
This bike features a Felt All Mountain frame built with Equilink suspension and UHC Carbon Fibre technologies. For rear shock, it comes with the Fox Performance Float X2.
Our Compulsion 1 bicycle has been generously praised by users for its smooth operation and smooth efficiency that can ride almost anything.
It’s also an excellent climber when it comes to roads and trails while doing a great job in going downhill as well. The bike comes with an amazing suspension that helps users ride and jump well.
Its outstanding performance is greatly attributed to its solid, stiff frame with versatile suspension that users have confirmed to deserve the title “all-mountain bike.” Some users even claim it has the best suspension they’ve ever seen.
The frame of the bike has got especially many compliments from users for its stiffness and nice design.
Last but not least, the bike is easy to set up with a great kit. If you are looking for a bike that can ride all things and all styles, this is definitely the one for you. You will get the best value for the price when owning this bike.
The Compulsion 2 bike comes with a design that allows you to ride both uphill and through a rock garden.
Like the Compulsion 1, this bike features Equilink technology that offers a balanced drivetrain force transferred through the strut to the rocker arms, which provides resistance against pedal-induced suspension bob.
We put innovation into the frame by keeping an uncomplicated design with no interrupted tubing or extra beefing around the frame.
In the front triangle, there is a light double-butted down tube along with a hydroformed top tube, both are made from 6061 aluminum. These are paired with a one-piece bottom lower pivot housing.
At the rear, there is a 6061 heat-treated aluminum triangle and a set of pivots that use needle roller bearings and fully sealed cartridge bearings. This bike also has one of the first 6-bar linkages in the industry.
